Gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma is a rare type of cancer of the esophagus, the tube that connects your mouth and stomach. It starts in the gastroesophageal (GE) junction, the area where the esophagus and stomach join together. The cancer grows from cells that make mucus.
If the cancer is in the lower part of the esophagus (near the stomach) or at the place where the esophagus and stomach meet (the gastroesophageal or GE junction), it is needed remove part of the stomach, the part of the esophagus containing the cancer.
Surgery can be used to remove the esophagus cancer and some of the normal surrounding tissue, depending on the stage of the cancer. Esophagectomy can be done in different ways.
